The Marketing Meetup Story

I’m the founder of The Marketing Meetup. I started the Marketing Meetup four years ago because I was a solo marketer working in a small company, I didn’t have anywhere where I could network with other marketers and I didn’t have a place where I could learn either.

Layered into this was the idea that I am far more introverted than I am extroverted. Walking into those rooms where people looked at you as if you were a piece of money, where they jumped upon you, where you had the responsibility to say hello to them first, that wasn’t something that felt natural, but it was also something that I knew was necessary in business and to also become better at what I did.

So I started The Marketing Meetup. The Marketing Meetup is a safe, welcoming, inclusive, positive place to be. It’s a place where you can learn how to be a better marketer, it’s a place where you can meet other marketers, and most importantly, all of this has been wrapped up in kindness and love.

We use the word community to describe The Marketing Meetup, because that’s truly what we think it is. It’s a place which isn’t just a broadcast, it’s a place where people can interact with each other and become better together.

When you attend a Marketing Meetup event, whether it’s online or in-person, our hope is that you leave stronger, happier, and more empowered than you would have been had you not have been there before. Over these past few years, things have gone kinda crazy. What started as a hobby, what started as a place where I could meet other people has turned into something far, far bigger, something far bigger than what I could possibly have imagined when I started out with that first event.

The Marketing Meetup is now a global community operating in the UK and the USA, but our online events have also enabled us to reach people in Australia, Ghana, Nigeria, Macedonia, Greece, wherever it is throughout the world, we have Marketing Meetup attendees. Prior to coronavirus, we used to do all of our events in person. We had 140 events across the world planned for 2020, obviously in the current climate that wasn’t possible, so now most of our activity is based online.

Primarily, this looks like webinars and conversation clubs. Webinars with people like Mark Ritson, Rory Sutherland, Margaret Molloy, Rand Fishkin.

Conversation Club is our opportunity to network, for you guys to meet each other and say hello.

It’s an opportunity for you to do the thing which you didn’t think we’d be able to do in the coronavirus world. It’s truly amazing. I feel so, so lucky with The Marketing Meetup, that we’ve been able to do what we’ve done, but every little bit of it along the way has been a complete team effort. It’s been me putting on the events, it’s been the local organizers putting on their events, but it’s also been the community banding together and making this what it is, a truly lovely place to be, where we can look after each other and learn about marketing and get better together.

So check out the rest of the website, take a look, let me know what you think, I’d love to hear from you. I’m at Joe at themarketingmeetup.com, and if there’s anything I can do for you, just let me know. We’re here for you, just like you should be here for the rest of our community. See you soon.
